Episode 62 – Chitter Chatter

In this episode, the girls chit chat with no specific topic in mind. Susie flings a shawl, and Danie casts on socks that are a departure for her.

Listen here.

Finished Projects

Susie finished her Cerise! It’s definitely on the shorter side, which she expected, but she’s finding it pretty easy to style.

Current Projects

Danie worked on her Dude Socks and they are zooming along. She also cast on a pair of Simple Skyp Socks she is modifying to her preferred stitch count out of Mountain Colors Crazyfoot in Ruby River.

Susie knit on her Dragonflies Jumper and after an initial worry about yarn, she thinks she’s going to be ok. She closing in on the heel of the second of her Electric Rainbow Friendship Socks.

Enhance the Stash

Susie made a much anticipated stash enhancement with a purchase from Ladybug Fiber Company with two skeins of her 400 Fingering 100% Merino in Sapphire and Tourmaline for this year’s Mother’s Day Cast-On.

Future Projects

Because there are never enough shawls on the needles, Susie is planning an Outlander Shawl using stashed yarn.

Project Reconsideration

Danie reconsidered her Lintilla. She adores the pattern and the yarn, but maybe not so much together. She’s considering the Narcissa Socks.

Truth.

Susie’s new old house is not haunted. There was no real worry about this, but she feels better for having proven it not to be.

Susie finally finished her 3/4 Hap Shawl. She didn’t attempt yarn chicken, and so modified the bottom edging accordingly.

Current Projects

Susie knit a few stitches on her John Huston, the Tarnished Hero socks.

Danie cast on her My First Stitches Socks, and swatched for a Mama Vertebrae.

Truth.

Danie is hard on things.

Contest

The winner of the “Would You Rather…?” contest is announced!

Finished Projects

Susie finished her Transition Gloves! She is happy with them, but if doing so was an option for her, she’d lengthen the hand a bit.

Current Projects

Danie worked on her StarBrite socks. She is bound and determined to get them finished. Soon. She also brought her Dreambird out of hibernation and is excited to be at the halfway point and is looking forward to working more on it. And she spun! And dyed!

Susie had a son of a stitch and ripped out her  Bubble Stream socks. She also started a second pair of her Zigzagular Socks,  picked up her Elizabeth shawl, and started seaming her Grenadine. She is trying to be mindful with the seaming, and is not allowing herself to rush through it.

Truth.

Danie is thinking about trying her hand at weaving, what with all her spare time and all.

Episode 23 – Block(ing) Party

In this episode, the Prairie Girls discuss blocking. Danie brings things back around, and Susie feels strongly about other things.

Listen here.

Miscellaneous projects mentioned include Susie’s Measure in LovePiper’s Journey, and Lintilla, and Danie’s Owl Sweater, Dreambird, Alaska Clouds, Wrapped in Leaves, a couple baby blankets, and Entangled Vines.

Events

Join the Prairie Girls on Team Sasquatch for the 2014 Ravellenic Games! Danie will be knitting the Middlefield Pullover, and Susie the Ahoy! Matey.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Lintilla. She loves it, but is considering re-homing it.

Current Projects

Susie keeps on keeping on, and knit on her second Measure in Love and her Conwy socks. She hit a minor son of a stitch with her Hiro and its bust darts, but the second attempt seems to have worked out.

In a push to finish projects before the start of the Ravellenic Games, Danie focused on her StarBrite Socks.

Truth.

Susie hates green beans. A lot.

Episode 18 – Magnum Opus

In this episode, the Prairie Girls dream about their magnum opus knitting projects. Danie finishes four mittens with strange-looking but very functional thumbs, and Susie has a yarn-related revelation.

Listen here.

Miscellaneous patterns mentioned include Oak Trail, In Dreams, and Celestarium.

Contest

The 2013 Legend-Prairie contest is underway! From now until January 5, 2014, post the project you consider to your most legendary of 2013 in the contest thread in the Ravelry group. The third of three prizes was announced – a skein of Simply Socks Yarn Company Poste Yarn, Striping in Garden District.

Finished Projects

Both Susie and Danie finished the knitting on their TINY tea leaves cardis for Danie’s girls.

Danie also finished her four-at-a-time Kool-Aid Mittens.

Current Projects

Susie started a hat of her own design, and knit at least one round on her Zigzagular Socks, but probably not many more than that.

Danie picked her Lintilla back up for some therapeutic knitting, and her StarBrite Socks for some cheery knitting. She also swatched, and then cast on for, an Entangled Vines cardigan.

Future Projects

Both girls are started thinking about their 2014 Ravellenic Games projects. Susie is deciding between a toddler sweater and husband socks. Danie is considering socks.

Project Reconsideration

Danie is reconsidering her A Twisted Little Raglan for something that will work better with the drape and growing-tendency of alpaca. Something like Wrapped in Leaves.

Enhance the Stash

Susie acquired two skeins of Malabrigo Rios in Vaa.

New to Me

Susie is a feminist history buff with an affinity for NYC and has been listening to two new-to-her history podcasts The History Chicks and The Bowery Boys.

Truth.

Susie doesn’t do Christmas knitting. At all.

Episode 13 – Let’s Talk About Socks, Baby

In this episode, the Prairie Girls have an off-the-cuff conversation about socks. Susie confuses Holloway with Lintilla, and Danie self-soothes with her sock yarn babies.

Listen here.

Miscellaneous projects mentioned include Danie’s First Toe Up Socks and Susie’s Basic Socks and Julia Socks.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Slither Socks, after a son of stitch resulting in a little sock surgery.

Current Projects

Danie worked a bit on her Copper Socks, and discovered her Lintilla has a magically replenishing ball of yarn attached to it.

Susie worked a little on her Mother’s Day Socks and finished the front of her Holloway Pullover. In a son of a stitch, she decided to frog the massive sleeve she started and cast on again several sizes smaller. She also started her Transition Gloves. Keeping with the “ridiculously huge” theme of her knitting week, frogged the first attempt and began again with smaller needles.

Project: Reconsideration

Danie has reconsidered her $5 in Paris in favor of two Tiny Tea Leaves Cardigans.

Enhance the Stash

Danie’s sock yarn stash was enhanced by skein of Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock in Tea Party.

Unhance the Stash

Danie helped Susie work through a moral dilemma involving The Plan and how close she is to the next level of Loopy Rewards.

Knits on Screen

Susie spied a yarn-filled moment on last week’s New Girl, when Nick holds up an enormous cone of yarn and asks Jess if she’s knitting a mansion.

Truth.

Susie has issues with the number 13.

Episode 12 – Project: Reconsideration

In this episode, the Prairie Girls have second thoughts about a couple of their projects. Susie stays strong in the face of pretty yarn and Danie reveals her knitting super power.

Listen here.

Miscellaneous patterns mentioned include Maluka, Rossbeg, and Kerrera For Kids.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Feel-Good Trifecta Cowl. And she does, after having a minor self-described rant and rave over her attempt at seaming. She got a little help from a friend at knit night and grafted it instead and it looks lovely. She also finished a Max’s Staircase Tam using the yarn the girls received as part of the Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild’s 2013 Fall Retreat goody bag.

Susie finished the First Birthday Socks, and they were very appropriately worn at the first birthday party.

Current Projects

Susie started the front of her Holloway Pullover. She’s clipping along at a fairly good pace, but is finding it somewhat slower going than the back. She also had a slight son of a stitch with her TGV that may turn out to not be a son of a stitch after all.

Danie worked on her Serpentine Socks, but just barely. She worked a lot on Lintilla, because she was in a potato-chippy kind of knitting place this past week. Her $5 in Paris threw her another son of a stitch, but hers was for real. She did fit in a little bit of spinning in to her week.

Project: Reconsideration

Susie is reconsidering her Effortless Cardigan. She has sentimental attachment to the idea of the project more so than the project itself, but is coming to terms with the fact that the thing is just too big.

Danie is beginning to reconsider her $5 in Paris, but is not making any hasty decisions.

Enhance the Stash

Danie picked up a couple skeins of Patons Kroy Socks FX, one each of Celestial Colors and Blue Stripes Rag.

Unhance the Stash

In an update so small it’s almost not an update all, Susie dug up the Shibui Knits Sock that she’ll use for her Transition Gloves to serve as a little motivation when her Holloway Pullover becomes a slog.

Truth.

Danie knits awesomely ridiculous hats.

Episode 9 – Sweaters and Stuff

In this episode, the Prairie Girls talk a lot about sweaters, and a little bit about other stuff. Danie has a sweater she finished in a hot minute, and Susie has one she’s plodding away on.

Listen here.

Contest

We want you to answer a burning question: If you were to knit socks for a celebrity, who would it be and why? To enter to win a skein of Malabrigo Rios in Archangel and a set of stitch markers handmade by Danie, please join our Ravelry group and post your answer in the contest thread. We’ll leave the thread open through September 29, 2013, and will announce the randomly-selected winner on that week’s podcast.

We also did a surprise drawing for reaching 100 members in our Ravelry group!

Events

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29. It’s finally close enough that the girls have thought about what they want to bring. Danie is still on the fence about whether or not to bring her wheel, but both girls agree that they want to bring simple, not-too-thought-provoking projects.

Finished Projects

Danie blinked last week and finished her Owl Sweater. It’s adorable (see above for proof).

Current Projects

Susie finished one of her Dragonfly Toddler Socks and got through the gusset decreases of the second one.  She is also working away on her Holloway Pullover. She had a brief freak out regarding her calculations accounting for her differing gauge and modifications based on her measurements, but confirmed her plan and is forging ahead.

Riding her sweater-finishing high, Danie started two new projects – Lintilla and $5 in Paris.

Wear Report

Susie reported on her pair of Sunshine socks she knit in June of 2009 out of Shibui Knits Sock, a 100% superwash merino sock yarn. She feels that they’ve held up well, all things considered.

Truth.

Susie does not baby her handknit socks. She secretly hopes that they will develop holes, so she doesn’t have to feel like a sock hoarder since the sock knitting is not stopping anytime soon.

Enhance the Stash

Danie was a responsible and scholarly stasher this past week and picked up The Gentle Art of Plying with Judith MacKenzie.

Susie was not so responsible. Since she was having her Camp Loopy bonus yarn sent to her (a skein of Lorna’s Laces Solemate in Blue Skies Over Colorado), she threw in a skein of The Loopy Ewe Solid Series in Cardinal.

Episode 8 – How Many Projects Are Too Many Projects?

In this episode, the Prairie Girls want to go cast-on crazy! Susie puzzles over what to do with a couple different skeins of variegated yarn and Danie enjoyed a Malabrigo Nube birthday bonanza.

The girls mention several different shawl patterns including  Lintilla, Magrathea, Trillian, Emma’s Shawl, and Henslowe, and hat pattern End of May (and its matching mittens).

Listen here.

Events

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Current Projects

Danie is experiencing the sock knitter’s paradox where the heels feel further and further away the closer they get on both her Copper Socks and her Slither/Serpentine Socks. She is also started knitting an owls sweater from a ball of yarn that is bigger than her head.

Susie had a son of a stitch moment when she realized that the leg of the first of her Dragonfly Toddler Socks was too short, and the short row heel too shallow and ripped them out. She has barely cast on for the second iteration, but can’t wait to finish them to do a monthly wear report suggested by a lovely listener. She also cast on the Elizabeth Shawl using yarn unearthed from her recent stash review.

Future Projects

Danie’s Stormy Cloud handspun will soon be shining in an Ione, and Susie is finally casting on the Holloway Pullover.

Enhance the Stash

Danie had a fantastically yarn-y birthday! She received a skein of Malabrigo Lace in Cuarzo, a skein of Regia Highland Tweed in , and Malabrigo Nube fiber in Arco Iris and Solis.

Knits on Screen

The girls saw Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – a terrible movie based on a series of books by Cassandra Clare that they both really enjoyed. The highlight was spotting a knit blanket fairly early in to it. Susie thought it might have been seed stitch, while Danie thought more linen-y stitch.

Truth.

Danie has a big thing for little sticky notes.

Episode 6 – Interrupting Spider Interrupts

In this episode, the Prairie Girls are interrupted by a spider and Enrique Iglesias. In knitting news, Susie triumphed and Danie traveled.

Listen here.

To enter to win a skein of Malabrigo Rios in Archangel and a set of stitch markers handmade by Danie, please join our Ravelry group and post your answer in the contest thread. Events

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Finished Projects

Susie was not at all excited to report that she finished Kiku. Very ‘meh’ about the whole thing. (Except not really.) The words “perfect”, “excellent”, and “wonderful” were used, only half-jokingly.

Danie finished plying her Stormy Cloud (Mountain Color’s Chinook) singles. She loves how it turned out but is still working out what she’ll do with 212 yards of heavy fingering-weight yarn.

Current Projects

Susie went a little nuts picking back up an existing project, casting on a new one, and swatching for yet another.

Danie did some spinning of the Malabrigo Nube in Plomo. She also cast on a new pair of socks using Patons Kroy Socks FX in Copper Socks. She is ribbing them all around the foot for a tighter fit, and will be doing a 60% afterthought heel to accommodate a higher arch. She is also still knitting the sport-weight socks but instead of plain stockinette as originally planned, she’s throwing in a bit of saucy patterning and is making the Serpentine Socks (snakes on a sock!)

Future Projects

Susie swatched for the Holloway Pullover, and even did some preliminary math to figure out between the pattern’s gauge, her gauge, and her guessed-at size. She’s doing the smart thing and until her size is confirmed before casting on, even though she’s sorely tempted to throw caution to the wind.

Review

The girls greatly enjoyed the fiber prep class they attended last week at Tonya’s Cute by Design. Susie was pleasantly surprised to find that she was at least familiar with some of the terms and concepts from the different podcasts she listened to. She also confirmed that she has no interest in spindling. Danie realized that her long draw didn’t need very much refinement at all; in less than two minutes and a slight positioning correction she was on her way.

Knits in the Wild

Danie was at the Renaissance Festival in Kansas City this past weekend and saw a quill spinning wheel in action.

Enhance the Stash

Susie got herself some Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Sport in Ash, White, and Fedora for the Viking Hat, and in Baltic Heather for the Holloway Pullover.

Danie picked up some Knit One Crochet Too Crock-O-Dye in Plum Black. The grey and dusty purple streak (not stripe) and very nicely highlight the black.

Knits on Screen

Susie is watching Season 4 of The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network. In the second episode, one of the girls on the “Frankfoota” truck was wearing a grey slouchy knit hat with a wide ribbed brim of about 3″, and the rest in a garter rib. She’s considering modeling a hat on it using Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool Worsted except maybe adding a pom pom.

Truth.

Susie has so many project bags she didn’t know what to do! She quickly figured it out, though, and spent 10 minutes looking through each one to find her socks-in-progress.
