Episode 16 – Finally FO

In this episode, the Prairie Girls talk about knitting from charts. Danie indulges her dyer side, and Susie finally finishes a project or three.

Listen here.

Contest

The girls are very excited to announce the first annual “Legend-Prairie” contest! From now until December 31, 2013, post the project you consider to your most legendary of 2013 in the contest thread in the Ravelry group. The first of three prizes was announced – a Ravelry-giftable pattern of $10 or less.

Review

Danie attended a dyeing class at Tonya’s Cute by Design and greatly enjoyed it. So much so that she went directly home from class and dyed two more new and gorgeous colorways.

Finished Projects

Susie went on a finishing spree last week – finishing Minnesnowta and her Mother’s Day Socks. But the true star of this FO parade is her Holloway Pullover, which turned out exactly like it was supposed to even if it’s a tad shorter than her usual sweater.

Current Projects

Danie worked a bit on Lintilla and her StarBrite Socks. She also knit a bit on her Purple Kid Socks and has decided to try them as tube socks, with an option to put in an afterthought heel in if they don’t fit well. She started a new project, the Winter Leaf Cowl, out of the yarn that sparked her dyeing fever. She also spun some on the Malabrigo Nube in Plomo.

Susie has been cruising along on her Zigzagular Socks. It’s turned into a bit of a re-design from the original, but she’s enjoying the process. She also picked back up her Transition Gloves, and realized she might not be as terrible at colorwork as she thought.

Knits on Screen

Danie spied some knitwear on an interviewer while watching the Nebraska-Michigan game.

Susie had two sightings – both on children’s shows. The first was on Abby’s Flying Fairy School on Sesame Street. One of the fairies, Gonnigan, sports an orange and yellow striped hoodie that shows knit stitch details in his closeups. The second was on Dog with Blog, when straight-laced Avery decided to prove her “edginess” by yarn-bombing a statue at school.

Episode 6 – Interrupting Spider Interrupts

In this episode, the Prairie Girls are interrupted by a spider and Enrique Iglesias. In knitting news, Susie triumphed and Danie traveled.

Contest

We want you to answer a burning question: If you were to knit socks for a celebrity, who would it be and why? To enter to win a skein of Malabrigo Rios in Archangel and a set of stitch markers handmade by Danie, please join our Ravelry group and post your answer in the contest thread. We’ll leave the thread open through September 29, 2013, and will announce the randomly-selected winner on that week’s podcast.

Events

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Finished Projects

Susie was not at all excited to report that she finished Kiku. Very ‘meh’ about the whole thing. (Except not really.) The words “perfect”, “excellent”, and “wonderful” were used, only half-jokingly.

Danie finished plying her Stormy Cloud (Mountain Color’s Chinook) singles. She loves how it turned out but is still working out what she’ll do with 212 yards of heavy fingering-weight yarn.

Current Projects

Susie went a little nuts picking back up an existing project, casting on a new one, and swatching for yet another.

Danie did some spinning of the Malabrigo Nube in Plomo. She also cast on a new pair of socks using Patons Kroy Socks FX in Copper Socks. She is ribbing them all around the foot for a tighter fit, and will be doing a 60% afterthought heel to accommodate a higher arch. She is also still knitting the sport-weight socks but instead of plain stockinette as originally planned, she’s throwing in a bit of saucy patterning and is making the Serpentine Socks (snakes on a sock!)

Future Projects

Susie swatched for the Holloway Pullover, and even did some preliminary math to figure out between the pattern’s gauge, her gauge, and her guessed-at size. She’s doing the smart thing and until her size is confirmed before casting on, even though she’s sorely tempted to throw caution to the wind.

Review

The girls greatly enjoyed the fiber prep class they attended last week at Tonya’s Cute by Design. Susie was pleasantly surprised to find that she was at least familiar with some of the terms and concepts from the different podcasts she listened to. She also confirmed that she has no interest in spindling. Danie realized that her long draw didn’t need very much refinement at all; in less than two minutes and a slight positioning correction she was on her way.

Knits in the Wild

Danie was at the Renaissance Festival in Kansas City this past weekend and saw a quill spinning wheel in action.

Enhance the Stash

Susie got herself some Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Sport in Ash, White, and Fedora for the Viking Hat, and in Baltic Heather for the Holloway Pullover.

Danie picked up some Knit One Crochet Too Crock-O-Dye in Plum Black. The grey and dusty purple streak (not stripe) and very nicely highlight the black.

Knits on Screen

Susie is watching Season 4 of The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network. In the second episode, one of the girls on the “Frankfoota” truck was wearing a grey slouchy knit hat with a wide ribbed brim of about 3″, and the rest in a garter rib. She’s considering modeling a hat on it using Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool Worsted except maybe adding a pom pom.

Truth.

Susie has so many project bags she didn’t know what to do! She quickly figured it out, though, and spent 10 minutes looking through each one to find her socks-in-progress.

Episode 5 – The Evolution of Two Knitters’ Stashes

In this episode, the Prairie Girls reflect upon how their stashes have changed along with them over the years. Danie has both amazing legs and an amazing pair of socks, and Susie recovers from two Kiku-related tragedies.

Listen here.

When talking about her meager stash of sweater-quantity yarn, Susie mentions her February Lady Sweater.

Events

We’re attending a fiber prep class at Tonya’s Cute by Design on August 29.

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Purple Haze socks! They fit fantastically, and as an added bonus she has enough yarn to make a second pair. She also finished her Stormy Cloud (Mountain Colors’s Chinook) singles and is looking forward to plying them.

Current Projects

Danie continues to work on her Dreambird, despite a son-of-a-stitch moment at knit night. She also cast on a new pair of sport-weight socks after finishing the Purple Haze socks and pouting because she didn’t have socks to knit.

Susie experienced TWO son-of-a-stitch moments while working on her Kiku over the weekend, involving dropped stitches that couldn’t be saved. One was tinked back, the other was ripped. She and Kiku have just barely gotten back on speaking terms.

Review

The girls review The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits from a super-huge-fan (Danie) perspective and a not-super-huge-fan perspective (Susie). Danie would definitely buy it again, and Susie wouldn’t.

Knits on Screen

Susie happened to catch the finalist episode from the Texas season of Top Chef and was delighted by Sarah’s red-and-white striped hat with a pom pom and ear flaps.

Danie again spied knitwear on Breaking Pointe that Susie somehow completely missed in the form of a gorgeous sweater with horizontal cables worn by Christiana.

Enhance the Stash

Danie got her hot little hands on some Malabrigo Nube in Plomo!

Truth.

Striped socks freak Danie out. Rubber bands do too.

Episode 3 – To Frog or Not to Frog?

In this episode, the Prairie Girls talk about frogging. Susie fantasizes about her next favorite pullover, and Danie has her mind opened to the possibilities of a cardigan.

Listen here.

The yarn pictured above, and that Danie mentions in the frogging discussion, is from a local-to-us dyer, The Dyeing Arts, in the Goblin’s Elbow colorway.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Guacamole Dreams Op Art Blanket! She thought it might have come out on the small side, but after looking at it again thinks it’s a good-sized baby blanket. Susie’s eyes crossed at the thought of all that applied i-cord, but Danie found it to go fast, all things considered.

Current Projects

Susie is still knitting away at her Kiku – no surprise there. While not confident about finishing by the Camp Loopy Project 3 deadline, she is more optimistic about her chances than at this time last week.

Danie didn’t make a whole lot of noticeable progress on her Purple Haze Socks but is very much enjoying her sock-knitting journey. Especially the part where she finds herself picking them up  here and there to knit – like while sitting in a drive-thru at lunch.

Future Projects

Susie has gotten to the point with Kiku that she’s allowing herself to think of what she might want to cast on for next. It will likely be a sweater, and probably a pullover at that. She’s considering the Classic Pullover,  the Holloway Pullover (both from Amy Herzog’s Knit to Flatter), or Antilogy by Kate Oates.

A Review

Danie found Drafting: The Long and Short of It with Abby Franquemont to be both entertaining and educational.  Throughout the watching of it, she had several light-bulb moments that helped boost her confidence as a new spinner. It caused her to take a second look at her long-draw singles from Tour de Fleece and realize they’re not half bad.

Knits on Screen

Susie got giggly during last week’s episode of Major Crimes when they referenced not only knitting, but crocheting too.

A lovely listener posted in our thread in the Podcast Junkies group on Ravelry to let us know that the main character in the first two seasons of The Killing wore some great sweaters.

Confessions

Danie is a sock knitter, despite swearing she would never enjoy knitting socks.
