Episode 5 – The Evolution of Two Knitters’ Stashes

In this episode, the Prairie Girls reflect upon how their stashes have changed along with them over the years. Danie has both amazing legs and an amazing pair of socks, and Susie recovers from two Kiku-related tragedies.

Listen here.

When talking about her meager stash of sweater-quantity yarn, Susie mentions her February Lady Sweater.

Contest

We want you to answer a burning question: If you were to knit socks for a celebrity, who would it be and why? To enter to win a skein of Malabrigo Rios in Archangel and a set of stitch markers handmade by Danie, please join our Ravelry group and post your answer in the contest thread. We’ll leave the thread open through September 29, 2013, and will announce the randomly-selected winner on that week’s podcast.

Events

We’re attending a fiber prep class at Tonya’s Cute by Design on August 29.

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Purple Haze socks! They fit fantastically, and as an added bonus she has enough yarn to make a second pair. She also finished her Stormy Cloud (Mountain Colors’s Chinook) singles and is looking forward to plying them.

Current Projects

Danie continues to work on her Dreambird, despite a son-of-a-stitch moment at knit night. She also cast on a new pair of sport-weight socks after finishing the Purple Haze socks and pouting because she didn’t have socks to knit.

Susie experienced TWO son-of-a-stitch moments while working on her Kiku over the weekend, involving dropped stitches that couldn’t be saved. One was tinked back, the other was ripped. She and Kiku have just barely gotten back on speaking terms.

Review

The girls review The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits from a super-huge-fan (Danie) perspective and a not-super-huge-fan perspective (Susie). Danie would definitely buy it again, and Susie wouldn’t.

Knits on Screen

Susie happened to catch the finalist episode from the Texas season of Top Chef and was delighted by Sarah’s red-and-white striped hat with a pom pom and ear flaps.

Danie again spied knitwear on Breaking Pointe that Susie somehow completely missed in the form of a gorgeous sweater with horizontal cables worn by Christiana.

Enhance the Stash

Danie got her hot little hands on some Malabrigo Nube in Plomo!

Truth.

Striped socks freak Danie out. Rubber bands do too.

Episode 4 – Knits a Go-Go

In this episode, the Prairie Girls talk about cooler weather and knitting on the go. Susie runs the gamut of emotions when it comes to her knitting, and Danie has sock questions.

Listen here.

When talking about Nebraska’s sneak-peek at fall-ish weather last week, Danie mentions the Galileo mittens, and Susie the Transition Gloves which are really fingerless mitts.

Current Projects

Susie is still working exclusively on Kiku. It was a roller coaster of a week, with highs and lows, but she thinks she’s inching slowly back to a high. She’s no longer certain that she’ll have to do extra chart repeats, to satisfy the 800 yard Camp Loopy Project 3 requirements, which is good because she’s ready for it to be off the needles. She’s still slightly worried that it will be too small for her, but Danie very kindly volunteered to take it off her hands if that should be the case.

Danie’s progress continues on her Purple Haze socks – the yarn for the afterthought heels has been knit in and she is working up the legs. She has been thinking about future sock projects, and is wondering about determining stitch counts based on the type of sock. Susie tried to answer, but wasn’t a whole lot of help. If any listeners have advice, please do let us know!

Danie also picked back up Dreambird, and is very glad she took detailed notes as to where she left off as it’s not the easiest pattern to pick back up again after putting it down for a bit.  This is her first time knitting with Noro (Silk Garden in this case). Both girls agree that they love the colors but are less crazy about the thick-thin tendency and the bits of “stuff” that comes with Noro.

Events

The Nebraska Knit and Crochet Guild‘s annual retreat at Mahoney State Park is September 27 – 29.

Knits on Screen

While watching a back episode of  Top Gear, Danie loved that host Jeremy Clarkson pointed out that he was wearing a “rather fetching hooded cardigan” that he picked up in La Paz, Bolivia.

Truth.

The girls confess that they unwittingly used the Savvy Girls‘ segment title Confessions, so they’re re-naming this segment to “Truth.” (The period is important.)

In other truths, Danie admits that despite being Nebraska born-and-raised, she has trouble spelling “field”, and Susie has to stop and think every time she has to spell “prairie”. Which is a lot more often these days.

Episode 3 – To Frog or Not to Frog?

In this episode, the Prairie Girls talk about frogging. Susie fantasizes about her next favorite pullover, and Danie has her mind opened to the possibilities of a cardigan.

Listen here.

The yarn pictured above, and that Danie mentions in the frogging discussion, is from a local-to-us dyer, The Dyeing Arts, in the Goblin’s Elbow colorway.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her Guacamole Dreams Op Art Blanket! She thought it might have come out on the small side, but after looking at it again thinks it’s a good-sized baby blanket. Susie’s eyes crossed at the thought of all that applied i-cord, but Danie found it to go fast, all things considered.

Current Projects

Susie is still knitting away at her Kiku – no surprise there. While not confident about finishing by the Camp Loopy Project 3 deadline, she is more optimistic about her chances than at this time last week.

Danie didn’t make a whole lot of noticeable progress on her Purple Haze Socks but is very much enjoying her sock-knitting journey. Especially the part where she finds herself picking them up  here and there to knit – like while sitting in a drive-thru at lunch.

Future Projects

Susie has gotten to the point with Kiku that she’s allowing herself to think of what she might want to cast on for next. It will likely be a sweater, and probably a pullover at that. She’s considering the Classic Pullover,  the Holloway Pullover (both from Amy Herzog’s Knit to Flatter), or Antilogy by Kate Oates.

A Review

Danie found Drafting: The Long and Short of It with Abby Franquemont to be both entertaining and educational.  Throughout the watching of it, she had several light-bulb moments that helped boost her confidence as a new spinner. It caused her to take a second look at her long-draw singles from Tour de Fleece and realize they’re not half bad.

Knits on Screen

Susie got giggly during last week’s episode of Major Crimes when they referenced not only knitting, but crocheting too.

A lovely listener posted in our thread in the Podcast Junkies group on Ravelry to let us know that the main character in the first two seasons of The Killing wore some great sweaters.

Confessions

Danie is a sock knitter, despite swearing she would never enjoy knitting socks.

Episode 2 – Summer Knitting, Had Me a Blast

In this episode, the Prairie Girls chat about what they like to knit during the hot summer months.  Danie tells how she got her DIY-on and Susie lists the usual places you can find one of her socks-in-progress.

Listen here.

Finished Projects

Danie finished her first bobbin of her Stormy Cloud BFL (the Chinook colorway from Mountain Colors Inc.) and is eager to get the second started and finished so she can get to plying. She also plied her long draw experimental singles from Tour de Fleece. Verdict? She’s happy with them.  Susie was most excited by the PVC niddy noddy Danie made herself using this tutorial.

Current Projects

Susie is not surprisingly knitting only on her Camp Loopy Project 3, Kiku by Anna Sudo using madelinetosh prairie in Steamer Trunk using US2/2.75mm needles. She is still concerned about the deadline, but is keeping her head down and her eye on the finish line.

Danie is slogging through her latest OpArt blanket by Melissa Dominguez using Red Heart Soft in guacamole and black. She decided mid-episode to add a final black stripe and call it good. She is also becoming more and more sure she’s turning into a sock knitter, thanks to her Purple Haze socks that she’s using to develop her own sock recipe.

Knits on Screen

Danie is watching Orange is the New Black and honed in on some brown fingerless gloves. In the same episode, she also picked up on a reference to a character knitting when she might have in fact been crocheting. She also caught a glimpse of what might have been handknit socks on Breaking Pointe.

Enhance the Stash

Susie got her hot little hands on a couple skeins of Into the Whirled Pakokku in Captain Tightpants and Walla Walla. She thinks she might have chosen better to get two more different colorways, but she must be drawn to these particular colors at the moment…

Danie ordered some Knit Picks Bare Stroll fiber, and scored a free set of interchangeable nickel-plated cable needles. She also picked up a spinning DVD “Drafting: The Long and Short of It” with Abby Franquemont. She’s looking forward to putting into practice some of the things she’s learning. Stay tuned for a review!

Episode 1 – A Very Good Place to Start

In this episode, the Prairie Girls introduce themselves and talk about their current, finished and future knitting and spinning projects. Danie theorizes about sock knitting, and Susie confesses her deep and unabiding love of finishing work.

Listen here.

Current Projects

Danie is working on her (second) OpArt blanket by Melissa Dominguez using Red Heart in Black and Guacamole, and some socks that Susie bribed her into starting.  She is having more fun than she would ever have expected, despite ripping out and restarting several times. She is determined to find her “perfect” stitch count to create her sock recipe.

Susie is knitting on her Ten Stitch Twist by Frankie Brown using her sock yarn scraps. Despite being sure it’s shaping up to be a pretty hideous blanket, she’s sticking with it. Even if it takes 10-15 years.

Finished Projects

Susie finished her Camp Loopy Project 1 back in June, the Olympic National Park Shawl by verybusymonkey using madelinetosh tosh merino light. She loves how it turned out, and is still a little surprised at how quickly she managed to knit it. She also finished her Camp Loopy Project 2 in July, the Lintilla by Martina Behm using Shibui Knits Sock in Dragonfly. It not only has just the right amount of ruffle, it also perfectly matches the vision she had in her mind when pairing the pattern and yarn, and that makes her ecstatic.

Danie finished her Find a Penny by Lindsey Tabsh using her very first finished handspun.  She managed to use just about every last bit of her gorgeous handspun, which is a very good thing.

Future Projects

While she is currently spinning some stormy-colored BFL, Danie is aiming for a light fingering weight 2-ply and is perusing her options on Ravelry but hasn’t committed to anything yet.

Susie will be casting on for her Camp Loopy Project 3 on August 1st. She will be knitting Kiku by Anna Sudo using madelinetosh prairie in Steamer Trunk.

Confessions

Susie confesses just how much she enjoys the finishing work of her projects, and that she sometimes takes it to the extreme.

Knits on Screen

Danie got distracted by Dr. Watson’s sweater in Sherlock, and Gru’s scarf and Edith’s hat in Despicable Me 2.
